Hobart Points pump early

Mays Point. Wednesday 10th March

The Hobart Points roared to life early this morning as a large south/south west swell bombarded the entire south coast. A high tide early limited options for a pre-work surf but by mid-morning many of the points were firing on all cylinders. A pulse of SW swell hit just on low-tide and  rewarded surfers with some classic 3-4ft barrels.

Weather bouys recorded swell in the 4-5m range with winds light westerly early before swinging south/south west and strengthing to 20-30 knots. Unfortunately todays swell will be short lived with wave height predicted to drop rapidly into tomorrow. A few photos from today can be found above.

Wave heights jump across South Arm

South Arm 3-4ft. Monday 1st March

A significant increase in swell this morning is due to a low pressure system moving under the state and is not Tsunami related. Beaches are closing out right across South Arm as a short range 2-2.5m South/South West swell hits the coast. Winds are from the South/South West and will continue to strengthen throughout the day.

Wave heights should continue in the 2-4ft range until Wednesday afternoon with winds fairly strong from the west. Long range forecast is starting to look very interesting. Keep an eye on the middle of next week.

Sneaky swell hits the coast

South Arm early Wednesday 24th Feb

The Hobart points were surfed by a lucky few yesterday as a solid 3m South/South East swell pushed into South Arm. With all the forecast models missing this swell and the surf reports claiming 2ft it was left to the locals guys  to enjoy a very intimate early morning session.

The swell has cleaned up this morning and pushed more south west with beach breaks all around South Arm hovering at 3ft. Exposed locations are bigger, possibly a small Shippies session for anyone on it early.

Laurie takes the 20g

Yamba surfer Laurie Towner is 20 grand richer after wining the prestigious “Biggest Wave” category in the  2009/10 Oakley Surfing Life Big Wave Awards. Last years winner Mark Mathews took out the biggest Slab Award while Kiwi surfer Doug Young won the Paddle Award for the largest wave ridden without jet ski assistance. Hawaiian big wave legend Darrick Doerner made a special guest appearence and presented the winners with a “Happy Gilmore” sized cheque and a custom made Allan Byrne surfboard each.

South swell hits the Arm

South Arm Beachie early Saturday 13th Feb

A small southerly swell filled into South Arm this morning with local beachies in the 2 to 3 foot range. After a week of almost flat conditions Hobart surfers made the most of a fresh swell and light variable winds. Waves will slowly decrease into  tomorrow with more open locations your best best for quality waves.  Winds will be light and variable Sunday so an early drive may be rewarding.

Nothing long range for South Arm or Shippies  but East Coast will see a decent size increase Tuesday. At the moment its looking like 3-5ft from the East with light variable winds tending North/North East.
